Introduced as a “budget” option alongside the Apple Watch Series 6, the Apple Watch SE have more in common with the Apple Watch Series 5 replaced, but lack its predecessor’s “Always On” display as well as its electrical heart sensor and ECG app (they do have an optical heart sensor). Compared to the more expensive Apple Watch Series 6, the Apple Watch SE line shares its always-on Altimeter, but is slower, lacks its Blood Oxygen sensor (SpO2) and app, has less capable Wi-Fi, and charges more slowly. It only is available in Aluminum and has fewer finish options and fewer default band choices, too.

This particular model, the Apple Watch SE (GPS, 40 mm) does not have wireless cellular capability, but higher-end models in the series also are capable of being connected to the Internet without a “tethered” iPhone for some functionality. This “GPS” model is required to be connected to an iPhone 6s or later running iOS 14 or later.

All Apple Watch SE devices are controlled with a Digital Crown with haptic feedback and a touch capable display. This particular Apple Watch SE, the GPS model in the 40 mm size, features a 324×394 LTPO OLED screen with Ion-X glass packed in an aluminum case with a ceramic and sapphire crystal back that connects to the charger.

Battery life is an Apple estimated “up to 18 hours” overall, but more specifically “up to 1.5 hours” of talk time connected to an iPhone (or to LTE for LTE-capable models), “up to 10 hours” of audio playback from Apple Watch storage, “up to 10 hours” working out indoors and “up to 6 hours” working out outdoors with GPS.

There were three aluminum options available from Apple Authorized Resellers — Gold with a Pink Sand Sport Band, Silver with a White Sport Band, and Space Gray with a Black Sport Band. A variety of other body and watch band combinations were available from Apple via customization, as well.
