A brief history of the man, the brand, and the bags that is Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton Matellier was born in the year 1821 in France. He was the son of a carpenter. At the age of 13, he left his home for Paris. In 1837, Vuitton became an apprentice at a successful box-making and packing workshop — a craft that was highly respected at the time. In the same year, he was appointed the personal box-maker and packer of the Empress of France. One thing led to another and twenty years later in the year 1854, He opened Louis Vuitton, a small box-making workshop crafting travel bags and luggage, and one of the world’s most iconic luxury brands was born. The sign outside the work read: “Securely packs the most fragile objects. Specialising in packing fashions”. LV luggage was not only a status symbol but also a practical purchase: Its trunks were and still are waterproof to prevent accidental damage to the items inside. The very first Louis Vuitton trunk was introduced in 1858 which happened to be the first trunk to have a flat top and bottom, as to be more easily transported. Previously, trunks featured rounded tops which allowed less accommodation as compared to the LV Trunks.

Louis Vuitton went on to create and trademark the Damier Canvas pattern for its range of luggage and trunks.

Damier is a checkered pattern, and was originally manufactured in a rare red and white checker, and a brown and tan checker that is reminiscent of the typical LV color scheme today. The Damier pattern is still in production on various Louis Vuitton pieces and in additional color pairings.

1896- LV Monogram Canvas

Finally, A successful move in fighting the counterfeits was made by Georges Vuitton who took over the company in 1892. He introduced the monogram canvas and patented it directly. Many of Louis Vuitton’s innovations were made in response to very fancy problems, and the Noé is chief among them. The drawstring was made for holding the bottles and making sure the bottles wouldn’t rattle around.

In 2013, Nicolas Ghesquière replaced Jacobs as the creative director and introduced the Capucines bag which has a vintage boxy shape and the sides angle out like a trapezoid, giving it a modern touch.

The name of the bag refers to the first store Louis Vuitton opened in 1854, at Rue des Capucines.
