Panerai Luminor Marina 1950 Marina Titanium 3 Days
It is very likely that your first Panerai watch was a nice, basic PAM111 or PAM112. So, perhaps it is time to look for a Panerai Luminor 1950, which has a larger, cushion-shaped case giving immense presence on the wrist. The PAM351 uses a much more sophisticated in-house Caliber P.9000 movement, which offers a full 3 days of power reserve. There is no quick-change system for the date — the hour can be advanced, or reversed, independently of the minute and the date changes accordingly. This is so very cool and useful for time zone changes etc. The PAM351 is quite unusual because it has a tobacco coloured dial and, get this, a TITANIUM case! If you show up to a cocktail wearing a nice, light blue suit, and a nice titanium PAM351… What else should I say? What the PAM351 does for collection is to present Panerai as not only a cool a historic novelty, but also as a real serious example of high end watchmaking. It has a stunning case design, a fairly typical Luminor Marina dial, high end materials and unusual colours.
This PAM351 features a titanium case and buckle, gold hands. The tobacco dial was another factor that got me falling in love with this Panerai. I have a soft side for vintage looking watches such as the Longines Legend Diver, Tudor Black Bay (Burgundy) and also the Panerais although I have since resented getting one up till now. There is no regrets on this piece to be honest even with the HUGE case sitting on my wrist.
The 351 has the P9000 movement, which is a fairly simple movement. The only refinement is the 3-day power reserve made possible by using two mainspring barrels. It does not have quick set on the date and the date changes slowly around midnight. No snap. These are two features I really think should be present in a watch in this price range. The rotor is also a bit noisy compared to other watches in the same price range. The quick set hour hand is however very useful especially when traveling.
It is waterproof to 300m so there is no reason to stay clear of water, the titanium carries scratches with style so there is no reason not to use is as a beater and it is a classic and elegant design so there is no reason not to wear it on semi-formal occasions.
This is truly a versatile watch and a beautiful one at that. The case and the dial is pretty close to perfection and the movement is really accurate.
